Text on Facebook Videos

10/17/2017

When you scroll down your Facebook feed, chances are the majority of what catches your eye—if even for a just second—will be video. But unless you click on a video, there will be no audio to accompany it and your message may get lost. That’s why it’s more important than ever to have some sort of text overlaid on your videos to help catch the attention of your desired viewer.

The hierarchy of attention-getting puts video posts on top, followed by posts with photos, and lastly text-only posts.

If your video contains spoken-word audio, your best bet is to use Facebook’s Automated Captions Tool that generates captions that appear within your video. Facebook’s Automated Captions Tool works pretty well, but make sure you preview your captions and make any necessary edits before your video goes live. You can also manually upload your own captions using an .srt file. YouTube has a similar tool.

If your video does not contain any spoken-word audio, you can supplement your video with text to make it grab your viewer’s attention faster. These text overlays help inform the viewer of the video’s content immediately and ultimately makes it more interesting. Vont and Text on Video Square are two free apps you can use to add text to your videos.

Take a look at the examples below. You’ve surely seen videos like these in your social media feeds. Think about what compels you to watch a video or read a post and implement those methods into your own social media promotions.
